INDIA AND PAKISTAN: HISTORY, POLITICS AND SECURITY (IR 70Q)

Overview

This seminar will cover India and Pakistan from Partition (1947) to the present. We’ll look at aspects of both countries, including their different political developments, religions, cultures, national identities, internal communal rivalries,  economic development paths, energy and environmental issues, and military and security issues.  We’ll focus special attention on the
Kashmir conflict and the nuclear rivalry.  The course will require a major research paper.  There may be some classes at KingscoteGardens #31, although the space is small.

Course Materials

1.    Hardgrave and kochanek,
India: Government and Politics in a Developing Nation (1999)
2.    Bennett Jones,
Pakistan: Eye of the Storm (2002)
3.    Mistry, A Fine Balance (novel)
4.    Bose,
Kashmir (2003)
5.    Patwardhan, War and Peace (film)
6.    Hoodhboy, Crossing the Lines:
Kashmir, Pakistan, India (film)

Teams

I’d like the class to divide into four teams:  Team 1 will focus on economic aspects, including gdp, agriculture, industry, trade and food security.  Team 2 will focus on social aspects, including population control, status of women, health, education, religion, caste, culture (eg bollywood films) and children in the labor market.  Team 3 will focus on energy and environment, including water quality and quantity, the Indus River Agreement, waste management, thermal, nuclear and renewable energy.  Team 4 will focus on political aspects, including national identity issues, role in world politics, nuclear competition and the
Kashmir impasse.  Each team will meet outside of class, supplement the readings with internet data, and
come to class prepared to discuss their findings in relation to the
India, Pakistan or Kashmir
readings.  On the film days, the teams are likely to have a larger role than usual.
